On Thursday everybody is being asked to put aside their normal attire and don a hockey jersey in support of Cornwall's Hockeyville bid. Tell your family, friends... employees. We would like to see hockey jerseys everywhere: on the streets, in restaurants, offices, banks... perhaps we'll even qualify for a Guiness World Record!

Cornwall Youth Centre
The Cornwall Youth Centre offers youth a place of gathering where they can grow in a respectful, secure, and unprejudiced environment under the supervision of qualified adults.
"The Cornwall Youth Centre provides opportunities for invaluable linkages between the Cornwall Community Police Service and the youth of Cornwall", said Daniel C. Parkinson, Cornwall's Chief of Police. "Front line patrol officers are encouraged to drop into the centre to interact informally with the youth who are serviced by the centre, thus allowing for opportunities for positive role modeling and a demystification of the role of the police in the community. An investment of time or money towards sustaining an accessible youth centre in Cornwall is a sound investment in the future of Cornwall."
"As Chief of Police, I am delighted with the support that the Rotary Club of Cornwall has directed toward the expansion of the Youth Centre project in our City", Chief Parkinson added. "Their commitment of time, effort and financial support could not be timelier. By expanding the efforts of the existing Youth Centre into the east end of the City, far more youth will be able to access vital recreational and leisure activities that will assist in ensuring the maturity through the difficult years of adolescence and teenagehood."
The Rotary Club of Cornwall
The Rotary Club of Cornwall meets at the Ramada Inn weekly at noon on Mondays. Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world.
This is the second time the tournament is held. Last year was a sell-out, so get your tickets as soon as possible!

What is the hottest fashion item this year? It could very well be the blue awareness bracelets that are appearing on the wrists of Cornwall citizens as a show of support for the hospital redevelopment campaign.
5,000 of the blue wristbands were purchased by WEBtech and handed over to the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation to raise awareness for the Our Hospital, Our Future campaign.
Area companies and organizations such as the Bank of Nova Scotia, Rona and the Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce are helping distribute the bracelets to its members and the public.
"Awareness bracelets are a very popular way of showing your support for a certain cause", said Peter Gault, owner of WEBtech. "We wanted to help the Foundation deliver their message to the community, and what better way than to have 5,000 people working for you?"
The blue wristbands are made of silicone and are inscribed with the Foundation's website address in both English and French. They will be sold at area stores for a minimum donation of $2.
The goal of the Our Hospital, Our Future campaign is to raise $10 million from the public. Recently, the Foundation announced that fundraising efforts had reached $8.9 million. The campaign has now shifted to the final community phase, with marketing messages aimed at the general public.
"The wristbands will help us meet one of our objectives, which is giving every member of the community a chance to participate and help out," said Richard Allaire, Chair of the Community Portion of the campaign. "By wearing the blue wristband you are showing your support for the new hospital."
Peter Gault acknowledged that this project capitalizes on the current fashion trend of wearing wristbands to demonstrate support for a particular cause. As of May 2005, over 50 million yellow Livestrong wristbands are being worn around the world to support cancer. Most recently, white bands (end poverty now) received a lot of exposure at the Live 8 concerts.
"Awareness bands are a conversation piece, and although many people are now recognizing the yellow band, they are curious when they see a band of a different colour", said Mr. Gault. "Blue is the hospital's corporate colours so it was a natural choice."
"Our immediate goal is to get the wristbands out of the Foundation office and on to people's wrists", said Mr. Gault. "We're a small office, so we turned to the local business community to help us distribute them."
The bracelets can be purchased at several local businesses, including the following locations:
- The Aquatic Centre
- Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce
- Cornwall Civic Complex
- Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation
- Cornwall Square
- Craig Keen Despatie and Markell LLP
- Flowers Cornwall
- Hunt Insurance
- Glen Fine Foods
- Ming & Associates
- Ramada Inn and Conference Center
- RE/MAX Cornwall
- RONA Cashway
- RONA (Perkins-Caron)
- Scotiabank
- Theresa Taylor Auctions
- The UPS Store
- WEBtech
"Response so far has been fantastic, and we expect young people to really support this effort", said Mr. Gault. "Our first sale was to two local teenagers, Matt and Ricky Despatie, who purchased a dozen bracelets for their basketball team."
Hospital Campaign Boots Up
Thanks to a generous donation in kind from WEBtech, the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation has officially launched its Our Hospital, Our Future Campaign web site:
www.ourhospitalourfuture.ca .
The Our Hospital Our Future Campaign is the Foundation's fundraising drive to provide the public share of the current hospital redevelopment project cost. With its goal of $10 million, the campaign is the largest of its kind in Cornwall and area history--and the web site will play a pivotal role in keeping the public informed on campaign progress.
Campaign Co-Chairs Gail and Tom Kaneb are grateful for the technical support for the campaign from WEBtech.
"Creating the web site is such an appropriate gift," Gail says. "It's symbolic of the advances in technology and imaging equipment we will have in the new hospital."
"WEBtech donating the site is also one more example of the overwhelming generosity of the people of Cornwall and area," Tom points out. "In today's world, having a web site is very important in executing your objectives."
The web site will run as a work in progress. Currently offering about 20 pages of information on the redevelopment campaign, new pages will be added each week. The public can view the architect's rendering of the new hospital, read answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs), and learn more about the volunteer team. Campaign staff will be able to post news stories themselves, keeping the site always up-to-date.
The French version is also under construction, as the site will function as fully bilingual.
Future plans are to have photos of the ongoing construction posted for view as well.
WEBtech is one of Canada's first web design companies. For the past decade, it has helped businesses take advantage of the commercial opportunities presented by the Internet. WEBtech's focus is on marketing, and its clients range from small companies to government organizations.
"We wanted to help out because the hospital is important to our community in many ways," says Peter Gault, owner of WEBtech. "My three children were born here, and the impact of the hospital in our daily lives cannot be overstated. Yet the hospital is also important to the long-term growth of our community, and will help to attract new doctors, new workers, and new residents."
"Investing in the new hospital," Gault adds, "is an investment in our future, and one that will pay dividends for generations to come."

Melanie Banville Gets Help for Olympic Run

Melanie Banville's run to the Olympics just became a little bit easier with the recent presentation of a cheque for over $5000 to Gymnastics Canada. The funds will be placed in a trust account in Melanie's name, and will be used to defray the costs of her training.
"Every parent recognizes the cost of helping their children achieve athletic dreams", said Peter Gault. "This cheque represents a helping hand from 11 local companies, and in part recognizes how proud we are of Melanie and her family."
Melanie is considered to be one of the top women gymnasts in Canada, and has a tough schedule of meets, trials and practice sessions in order to get ready for the summer Olympics in Athens Greece.
"I am very thankful for the generous support of Cornwall's business community," said Melanie Banville. "I will do my best to represent both Cornwall and Canada wherever I compete".

Help Send Melanie to the Olympics
Melanie is joined by Terry Landon of REMAX Cornwall (left) and Peter Gault of WEBtech (right) |
Peter Gault of WEBtech, and Terry Landon of RE/MAX Cornwall, officially launched the Send Melanie to the Olympics Foundation at a recent Team Cornwall breakfast.
"Every family knows how expensive it is to have a child on a travelling team", said Peter Gault. "Melanie is on the ultimate travelling team, and with that role comes added expenses for her family. As a Team Cornwall member, Melanie is also part of our family, and we should help with some of the expenses."
Melanie Banville is a member of the Canadian Women's Gymnastics National Team. She finished 2nd overall at the recent Canadian championships and was a silver medal winner at the Pan-Am games in Santo Domingo.
The Foundation is a non-profit effort to help offset the costs incurred by the Banville family as Melanie prepares for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. The costs of her training and her travel will be significant, the majority of which will have to be borne by her family.
"We are proud to have Melanie join Team Cornwall", said Team Cornwall Chair Gilles Latour. "When Melanie competes next summer in Athens, she will be not only representing Canada but her hometown as well. The Foundation allows everybody, Team Cornwall member or not, to play a small role in helping Melanie achieve her goals".
In making the official announcement of the Foundation, Mr. Gault identified several companies who have come forward to jumpstart the fundraising. These companies include Columbia Finishing Mills, Computer Sense, the Cornwall Colts, Craig Keen Despatie and Markell LLP, PCY Carriers, RE/MAX Cornwall , and WEBtech. He also announced that a website has been set up track the progress of the Foundation, and to answer any questions people might have about making a donation. People can also obtain information at the offices of WEBtech, Re/Max Cornwall or Craig Keen Despatie and Markell LLP.
You can help by making a donation....
Imagine watching Melanie at the Olympics next summer knowing that you helped her get there!
